The Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum began its life as its name suggests – a school in the segregation area meant for the attendance of black students.

It was in operation from 1923 to 1958.

During this time, most young black Americans were unable to go to school, forcing them to instead learn in local churches.

The Colored School and many other institutions like it were created to provide educational spaces for black Americans.
