Old Mission Santa Inés

Old Mission Santa Inés has a history spanning over two centuries and has more than earned its stripes, not just as an important Catholic Mission, but as a prime tourist hotspot in Solvang and, indeed, all of California.

It overlooks the valley of the Santa Ynez River and the beautiful mountain ranges of San Rafael and Santa Ynez.

It was the year 1804 when this mission was established, originally meant to help integrate the Santa Ynez valley’s Chuman People into Spanish life.

It is one of 21 missions in the state built by missionaries of the Franciscan faith and was founded by Father Estevan Tapis.

Old Mission Santa Inés has gone through many events in its long life.

From natural disasters to political and social unrest and from financial difficulty to an entire rebellion, the mission didn’t start out as a gem of Solvang.

In fact, years of disrepair, neglect, and decay almost ruined the building before several restorations brought it back up to its current glory.

Today, Old Mission Santa Inés is still an active church and its parish holds masses in Spanish and English.

It’s also a home for a large rare art collection that includes manuscripts, statuary, artifacts, paintings, and vestments.

It also boasts a gift shop and a beautiful garden if you’re looking for more options for what to do onsite.

Docent-led tours offer new insights into the church, museum, and garden.
